The UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA
in collaboration with
Initiated and funded by
Water Research Commission of South Africa and
the Department of Agriculture
hereby invites you to a symposium on nutritional value and water use of indigenous crops for improved livelihoods from
19 - 20 September 2006 in Pretoria, South Africa. In South Africa, indigenous, indigenised and traditional crops have received limited research attention, but interest is increasing.
At this stage little is known about their role in the overall food acquisition system of vulnerable people in different parts of the country, especially in terms of their contribution to the intake of important micro nutrients.
Knowledge on the water and agronomic requirements of these crops, their different uses, their nutritional value, and the bio-availability of the nutrients they contain is also scanty.
This symposium is aimed at bringing together knowledge about indigenous crops that does exist South Africa, and to enrich this local knowledge with knowledge developed elsewhere, particularly in other African countries. |
